Hotel Snapshot

Come for the peacocks, stay for the hospitality. That’s undeniably the ethos at the Inn at Green Pastures, a 63-room property that is quite literally built upon one of the most iconic bastions of southern charm in Austin, Texas. Green Pastures – previously known best for the beloved Matties’ at Green Pastures restaurant, now has not only a widely-lauded dining destination, but also a delightful boutique inn that has all the convenience of big city living, and none of the hustle and bustle.

Design & Character

The Inn joins a property with a rich history that spans over 130 years and seven acres. The original building on the property, a 120-year-old Victorian farmhouse, has long stood as a symbol of progressive value and welcome. It served as Austin’s first racially integrated restaurant when it was transformed into a legendary dining room in 1946, and it has continued to welcome guests from all backgrounds ever since.

The beautiful three-story hotel combines modern design with a sense of veneration for its natural surroundings, including the age-old live oak trees that surround the property. The L-shaped building is quite literally built around these impressive trees, which offer a beautiful canopy of greenery (and shade in warmer months). Indeed, hardwood is a design motif throughout the property – guests traverse an impressive wooden catwalk to reach the chic lobby of the hotel, and rich hardwood floors adorn all guest rooms and suites, too. And given the primary green and blue color palette of the hotel (a nod to the stunning plumage of the peacocks that wander the grounds), earthy jewel tones of the Inn at Green Pastures create a bucolic, restorative aura across the property.

The Rooms

Comprising 54 rooms and 9 suites for a total of 63 rooms, the Inn’s accommodations are at once cozy and comforting, with warm lighting in the hallways giving away to floor-to-ceiling windows in the rooms. Ceilings are notably high across all three floors, creating a sense of openness and airiness even in more compact rooms. The contrast between the peacock-inspired wallpaper, light wood bedframes, and dark hardwood floors creates a sense of luxury, as do the striking marble sinks in the bathrooms (some of which feature deep soaking tubs).

Plush slippers and comfortable bathrobes make your in-room experience feel like a spa experience, which is only made more notable by the fact that rooms do not feature desks or anything that might remind you of work – it’s clear that if you’re at the Inn at Green Pastures, you’re here to relax.

While the nine suites of the hotel are certainly sought after, don’t worry if you can’t snag one of them – the hotel offers several adjoining rooms, which allows you to expand your dwelling size to accommodate your family.

Food & Drink

Of course, the main draw of Green Pastures has long been Mattie’s, and for good reason. The food at this farmhouse restaurant – mere steps from the Inn – is undeniably exquisite, with specialties like fried chicken, pork ribs, and hummingbird cake more than cementing this outpost’s place in Texas dining lore. There’s a reason that snagging a reservation at Mattie’s can be a challenge, and it’s not only the quality of the food and drink (you simply must try the milk punch) – it’s also the friendliness of the service and the beauty of the indoor and outdoor seating areas, all of which make diners feel like they’re at their country home rather than dining out.

But if you don’t manage a seat at Mattie’s, don’t worry - you’re more than taken care of at Henry’s. This on-site restaurant fully embraces a day-to-night concept, serving everything from morning coffee with hot smoked salmon to late-night cocktails and dinner. Get the bone marrow and be delighted by breakfast cocktails like the surprising Breakfast Martini (with gin, red berry liqueur, lemon and strawberry jam) and refreshing frozen drinks. And when the weather’s right, take some oysters out by the pool.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Centrally located in Austin’s charming Bouldin Creek neighborhood, you’re just steps away from bustling South First Street and South Congress Avenue with world-class dining and shopping. And yet, despite this proximity, the Inn feels entirely removed from big city life. Take a walk in the neighborhood and marvel at the modern architecture of surrounding homes before heading over to famed Bouldin Creek Cafe for some vegetarian grub, and then to South Congress to window shop and Aba for a killer happy hour or brunch.
